This week the Beer Guys get “the chair”…Red Chair, that is. It’s an NWPA from Deschutes Brewery out of Portland. This is an IPA type beer but with a simple one-dimension recipe. From their web site they say this, “The citrus punch of a big IPA, minus the one-dimensional hop sledgehammer. Seven select European and domestic malts round out the edges for a complex, copper-colored brew. Like its namesake ski lift, it’s an insider’s ride to fresh thrills.”

Does it live up to the hype? Listen to this weeks episode and find out!

  1. Corrections;

    ” It’s an NWPA from Deschutes Brewery out of Portland”
    [WRONG, it’s a beer from the Deschutes Brewery out of BEND Oregon, it’s not even in the same REGION as Portland]

    “This is an IPA type beer but with a simple one-dimension recipe”
    [WRONG AGAIN, the hops are a bit subdued, being overtaken by the bitterness infused by the deeper roasting of a COMPLEX recipe of malts, making this more of an ESB style, than an IPA style]

    1. My opinion is that this is a great take on the ESB style, NOT the IPA style.
    2. As far as Geography, Culture, Elevation, and Population, “BEND” Oregon and “PORTLAND” Oregon are WORLDS APART!

  2. We stand corrected Chuck, you are right about location, although they have a brewpub in Portland as well.

    As far as this being a great beer… it’s all interpretation. I would agree that perhaps it is more of an ESB style now that you mention it. Keep in mind that some of the information that you quoted came from their website. I just didn’t care for this beer a great deal, but that’s me.

    Deschutes Brewing makes many good products and we look forward to sampling many more.

    Thanks for your feedback Chuck and for stopping by the site! Feel free to keep us on task, we appreciate it! Greg
